BOWLING GREEN--A controversial discovery minutes before the January 29th meeting of the Bowling Green State University Interfraternity Council left members ready to move directly to new business.

Before the meeting began, IFC President Josh Benner along with Vice President of Service and Involvement Eric Young discovered a group wishing to form a chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon holding a chapter meeting. According to Benner, a group of approximately 20 to 25 individuals were gathered on the fourth floor of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union passing out meeting agendas with the TKE crest on the upper corner.

Benner read the agenda of the group to the council which included items such as scholarship and housing. TKE is not to form an interest group or return in any form to the campus until the Fall 2008 semester according to the Greek Affairs Expansion report.  According to the observations of Benner and Young the group also had a sign up sheet for new recruits.

“They have been told by myself and the previous IFC president they cannot be recruiting,” Benner said. During the fall of 2007, group leader K.J. West appeared before IFC offering an apology for early recruitment and formation activities and promising that he was aware of the policies he had violated. He also stated that he would halt all of his group’s activities until his group was allowed to colonize.

Despite the promise of West, the meeting observed earlier in the evening directly contradicted his previous statements and did not fall well upon the council. “If they are going to play dirty with this then who knows what they may do in the future,” said Joe Schoch, Alpha Sigma Phi President. Sigma Nu President Joe Dinardi agreed, “They are acting like a fraternity right now and they are not allowed to be here.”

The issue seemed to be agreed on by a majority of the council members. “They have people already and it was made clear to them not to continue recruiting,” said Pi Kappa Phi President Mike Masterson. Further discussion by the council resulted in agreement for a letter to be drafted to both Tau Kappa Epsilon National Headquarters and to West. This letter will state the council’s intention to not support TKE’s expansion efforts in Bowling Green based on their refusal to adhere to Greek Affairs and IFC policies.

In other chapter business, Vice President of Administration and Scholarship Kevin Beres proposed his spring 2008 semester IFC budget to the council for approval which was unanimously approved. Beres also introduced the new IFC Scholarship Chairman, Bernardo Aguiar of Alpha Sigma Phi.

Vice President of Judicial Affairs Paul Gillespie reported that his training sessions for new justices had gone successfully and he would be holding a training session for returning justices this week. Gillespie also introduced the new Risk Management Chairman, John Dinan of The Kappa Alpha Order.

Nic Baldwin, Vice President of Recruitment and Retention named Chris Greggila of Sigma Alpha Epsilon as Public Relations Chairman and Zac Ankrom of Sigma Phi Epsilon as Member Development Chairman. Baldwin added that IFC recruitment events would be posted to the BG IFC website to increase chapter awareness.

Vice President of Service and Involvement Eric Young named Sean Martin of Phi Delta Theta as The Greek Unity Chair. Martin immediately had a report saying that this year’s Greek would be occurring the week of April 3rd through the 12th. He also added that he would have more specifics on Greek Week in the coming meetings. Young also introduced Bobby Carr of Alpha Tau Omega as the Community Service Chairman and added that he hoped to name a Philanthropy Chairman in the coming weeks as the position still remains open.
